How coconut oil is made
Coconut Oil is made by pressing fresh coconut meat or dried coconut meat (the white inside) also known as the Copra.
First, the coconuts are cut in half. It goes through a machine that shreds the coconut shells into thin pieces. The shredded pieces are soaked in water, then placed inside of a bag. The bag is put inside of a Cold Pressing Machine that squeezes the bag multiple times, until the coconuts are fully drained. The drained water and coconut shells are separated by a strainer. The coconut water sets overnight in a glass container. In the morning you’ll notice the coconut water is separated into 3 parts. Top: coconut cream (thick, creamy bubbly substance), Middle: coconut oil (light brownish color), and the Bottom: coconut water (white liquid substance). The coconut oil is separated from the milk and water using a filter. The cloudy coconut oil is put into a glass container using plastic wrap, with a slight opening on the top. It sits overnight allowing the moisture to evaporate off the coconut oil eventually turning it into our finished product which turns into a clear coconut oil.
Refined vs. unrefined coconut oil
Refined coconut oil comes from dried coconut meat that is refined by steaming. (Chemicals are not used in this process). Refined coconut oil refers to oil that has been through a chemical and heating treatment during or after the extraction process.
The quality of the oil may vary as a result of the severity of the chemicals used and the extraction process. Extraction process: removing the starch and nutrients to produce dried coconut meat). The finished product will result in the oil being clear and odorless.
Unrefined coconut oil also known as “virgin” or “extra virgin” coconut oil. The oil is derived from fresh meat that has been cold pressed. This treatment helps to retain the coconut smell, purity and natural taste. The coconut oil is 100% pure with no harmful chemicals or solvents used in the process.
